“Harlem through a Different Lens - My brother had originally gifted me a certificate to take a photo-tour with Leanne and when the chance to do one of her Harlem Photo Tours came up, I had to jump on the opportunity. I'd been following her work for a while and subscribe to her e-newsletters, which are always interesting.
Even though I've lived in NYC for a few years now, I'd never really has a chance to explore Harlem in this way and Leanne is the quintessential guide for this kind of a unique experience. She took the time to get to know each of us prior to starting the tour and made sure we all had our settings right. She'd sprinkle helpful tips along the way too, like shooting from the hip, to maximize the kind of street photography shots and improve your skills. Even the experienced photographer can benefit from this experience and try out new techniques.
Leanne keeps the groups small enough to be able to keep the experience personal while also having a big enough group that you can mingle with international photographers (of all levels) taking part. Our group was lovely and I really enjoyed getting to know everyone along this shared shooting experience.
One thing to point out is that some people on the street resisted being photographed (although in NYC, it is perfectly legal) but we faced no problems and Leanne had briefed us prior to starting about being sensitive to such possible reactions.
What I additionally enjoyed was how well Leanne knows the neighborhood and the valuable recommendations she shared of places to try out off the beaten path. I would highly recommend this particular tour for both locals and folks visiting NYC that want to truly experience Harlem before it changes too much due to gentrification. Thank you Leanne for the wonderful experience!” Loryne, New York City, NY
